There is good news for iPhone 4 owners as one hacker that goes by the name of Pod2g has tweeted earlier today that he has finally jailbroken his iPhone 4 to iOS 5.1. He also confirmed that it is an untethered jailbreak; it means that you will be able to run iOS apps which are not offered on the Apple App Store and that you will not be needing any external device just to boot your jailbroken iPhone 4.
Hackers like Pod2g actually dedicate their programming career to discover the vulnerabilities of an iOS and develop ways to implement the system to any device they want albeit not legally. Apple hasn’t really expressed its support for the said practice but it is actually one of those things that would make its devices popular and wanted. If not because of these jailbreakers, we cannot imagine if Apple’s iPhone, iPad and iPod would actually build up some hype over the internet.
Jailbreaking has already been a decade-long practice for many iOS device owners. Every time a new device is released, these people would also share their insights about how they can do to make those homebrew apps run on these devices. In the past five years, the number of jailbreakers rose and homebrew app developers have also increased in numbers making any device released by Apple wanted in an ever-growing community of people who want to do some experiments on their device.
A few weeks ago, Pod2g who is also a part of Jailbreak Dream team shared a few possible vulnerabilities which his team can use in jailbreaking iOS 5.1 to any iOS device. So, by then people have already been expecting an untethered jailbreak. But not until the 30th of April that Pod2g shared that he was positive of two vulnerabilities (1 kernel land and 1 root land). While many think a jailbreak to iOS 5.1 isn’t worth the effort as iOS 6 will soon be released, he continued in doing what he does best. After almost a week of sharing those two vulnerabilities, he tweeted that his iPhone 4 is now running on iOS 5.1 after doing an untethered jailbreak to it.
Therefore, he showed the people that it is now possible to jailbreak the said iOS version. The good thing about the jailbreaker community is that if one hacker knows a way to jailbreak an OS, it would be shared to others who in turn would do their part to discover their own way to do the job. So, after a week or so from now, we might be hearing another hacker claiming his device is also running iOS 5.1.
