Powerful, unique and brilliant – These are the words that would perfectly describe the HTC One X and Apple iPhone 4S. Neither of these two smartphones can be underrated. The Android powered HTC One X flaunts its stylish and elegant design while the iOS powered Apple iPhone 4S can definitely take pride of its premium glass casing that blends well to its stainless steel rim. Furthermore, both are packed with high-end specs that you cannot easily find on any other handsets.
This comparison will attempt to compare the specs and features of the newly launched HTC One X against the specs and features of the six month old Apple iPhone 4S. We all know that a lot of people were enthralled by the revolutionary features of the fifth generation iPhone but can it manage to protect its outstanding reputation from the striking charm of the HTC One X? The answer to that will depend upon the result of this comparison.
Even so, we do not intend to let these two smartphones compete in a way that one would be declared as the underdog. By doing this comparison, we hope to clear your doubts and apprehensions as we will be dealing with the pros and cons. Therefore, if you want to make sure that you are going to buy the one that would suit your needs and your budget, it would be best for you to refer to this comparison.
APPEARANCE
As expected from a flagship device, the HTC One X sports a superior look that’s been somewhat dubbed as the new level of iconic design. Flaunting its beautifully crafted polycarbonate body that appears to be a combination of a high gloss piano finish and a matte back, the HTC One X can definitely be considered as one of this year’s most superb looking smartphones. But as much as we love to keep our eyes focused on its form factor, there were reports stating that the phone’s unibody casing is one of the reasons why its display tends to flex and discolour. This issue may not be as extreme as the iPhone 4’s ‘death grip’ problem but still we prefer a phone that’s free from any factory aberrations. The iPhone 4S, on the other hand, is not exempted. As a matter of fact, issues related to the iPhone 4’s Death Grip has been passed on. Interventions to correct the said issue have been applied though. Anyways, that doesn’t change the fact that the iPhone 4S looks really premium and refined. Its front and back are both made of glass and it highlights its metallic (stainless steel) rim with metal buttons.
But when it comes to the technical aspect, the HTC One X appears to be slimmer and lighter than the Apple iPhone 4S. It flaunts its 8.9mm thin body and it only weighs 130 grams whereas the fifth generation iPhone flaunts a 9.3mm thin body with an average weight of 140 grams. In addition, the HTC One X sports a larger form factor. Obviously, a large phone may not be too convenient to hold.
DISPLAY
Since the HTC One X sports a larger form, it is not really surprising for it to flaunt a large display with a full screen resolution that’s been set to 720 x 1280 pixels. In fact, it highlights its 4.7 inch Super IPS LCD2 capacitive touchscreen with 16M colors. The smartphone’s display supports multi-touch and it’s coated with Gorilla Glass.
Meanwhile, the iPhone 4S showcases its decent 3.5 inch LED-backlit IPS TFT capacitive touchscreen that’s been paired to its 640 x 960p screen. Just like the One X, the iOS powered handset can take pride of its scratch and dust resistant display thanks to its Gorilla Glass and oleophobic coating.
No doubt about it. Both smartphones are equipped with vibrant screens. However, you won’t be making the most out of your videos and photos if you are going to have them displayed on a phone with a smaller screen.
OPERATING SYSTEM
The Android 4.0 ICS OS inside the HTC One X is quite remarkable and snappy. It is very responsive and packs a lot of features that you will definitely be able to use in times of need. Plus, you will have the ability to access the world’s largest market for Android apps and that is the Google PLAY Store.
The iOS 5.1 inside the Apple iPhone 4S may not give you the access to Google’s PLAY Store but you can certainly take advantage of your privilege to wander around the Apple App Store. You’ll also be able to download the hottest songs from iTunes as you sync and upload your files to Apple’s Cloud Storage. Also, the iOS has long been known for being extra responsive to your touch commands or motions. It is also very unlikely for you to encounter a laggy iOS application.
PROCESSOR, MEMORY AND STORAGE
When it comes to power, both are packed with supreme processors. The international version of the HTC One X relies on its 1.5GHz quad core Nvidia Tegra 3 chipset while the iPhone 4S boasts its 1GHz dual core Cortex A9 Apple A5 processor. Just don’t let the number of cores fool you. As a matter of fact, Apple claims that its dual core A5 chipset is twice as powerful as Nvidia’s quad core processor.
But if we speak of memory, the 1GB RAM of the HTC One X appears to be superior than the 512MB RAM of the iPhone 4S. But when it comes to storage, the latter can offer you with three storage options (16GB, 32GB and 64GB) while the former can only provide you with 26GB of user-available storage. Both smartphones lack the needed support for micro SD card. You need to manage your files well or else, your phone will be packed with unused files and applications.
CAMERA
For photo buffs, a phone must have a decent camera. In this case, we can say that we prefer the cameras of the HTC One X over the cameras of the Apple iPhone 4S. That’s because the One X sports a rear facing snapper with 8MP sensor that allows you to take photos while recording HD videos. The iPhone 4S does have its own 8 MP rear camera but it lacks the needed support for simultaneous HD video and image recording. Even so, its LED video light and video stabilization features are good enough to help you boost the quality of your photos and videos.
But if you are fond of video calling, you will definitely prefer the 1.3MP front facing camera of the HTC One X over the front facing VGA camera of the iPhone 4S.
CONNECTIVITY
Both handsets can connect via Wi-Fi and 3G. Thus, you won’t have any problem with connectivity. It’s just that the iPhone 4S does not support LTE. Yes, it supports 4G but it can only be used on networks with HSPA+ support and not on networks with LTE support. As for the HTC One X, it does have its carrier-specific variant that supports LTE. Also, it is important to note that the One X supports NFC while the iPhone 4S flaunts its full-sized USB 2.0 port.
PRICING AND AVAILABILITY
There’s no need to wait for these two smartphones to be made available in the market. That’s because you can now get the HTC One X for a suggested retail price of 699.95 US Dollars. If you do prefer to order the phone thru Amazon, you will able to get it for a lower rate of 688 US Dollars. That’s for its lone 32GB version. Meanwhile, the iPhone 4S is currently being sold by Apple. You can get the unlocked and contract-free version of the phone for a starting price of 649 US Dollars. The 32GB version of the iPhone 4S can be yours for 749 US Dollars. Price wise, the HTC One X is cheaper than the Apple iPhone 4S.
CONCLUSION
Here comes the part wherein we need to make a verdict. We do find the HTC One X as very appealing. The same goes for the iPhone 4S. But, in our case, we’d rather go for the HTC One X. That’s because it is cheaper and it is packed with similar specs. Also, we’re quite contented with the One X’s 32GB storage and we do like to explore the new features of its Android Ice Cream Sandwich OS. Even so, that does not indicate that you would prefer the same. Do take note that the iPhone 4S may not have a 1.3MP front facing camera and it may flaunt a smaller display but it has a lot of features that you cannot get from an Android phone. Take for example, Siri and its iCloud cloud service integration.
The thing is if you are used to iOS and you don’t have any plans to switch to Android, the iPhone 4S is definitely a good choice. Well, you don’t really have any options unless you would go for a tablet instead of choosing a smartphone. Likewise, if you are an avid fan of Android, you would certainly prefer the HTC One X as it is powered by Google’s latest Android version.
