Verizon has yet to release its version of the Samsung Galaxy Nexus, but some lucky AT&T and T-Mobile customers already have this smartphone, courtesey of the online retailer eXpansys. The company is now taking pre-orders for its next shipment.
Verizon will be the first U.S. carrier to offer it, but eXpansys has an unlocked version that works with GSM carriers, including AT&T and T-Mobile. Because this model is being sold directly to the public, without a carrier subsidy, the price is $700.
The online store's first shipment sold out in 16 hours, but it is taking pre-orders for the second. Exactly when this will be available was not revealed.
Samsung Galaxy Nexus Overview
The first thing many will notice about this smartphone is its 4.65-inch, 1280 x 720 touchscreen. The Super AMOLED display is slightly curved to fit against the user's face during phone calls, a feature that was also part of its predecessor, the Samsung Nexus S.
At the heart of the Galaxy Nexus is a 1.2GHz dual-core processor and 1GB of RAM. This isn't the fastest chip available -- some rival models have a 1.5GHz dual-core one.
The handset runs Android OS 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich) without Samsung's usual alternate user interface. The next version of Google's operating system sport a number of user interface changes, such as replacing the hardware buttons below the display with on-screen virtual buttons. Many of the bundled apps have been improved as well.
This smartphone has 3G, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, GPS, and NFC. It has a 5 megapixel rear-facing camera with 1080p video recording, as well as a 1.3 megapixel one on the front for video conferencing and a new feature in Android 4.0: Face Unlock.
Verizon's version of the Samsung Galaxy Nexus will support its 4G LTE service. When it's going to be introduced is not yet known, but rumor says that it will debut on Dec. 8.
